Young wildlife is not always abandoned.

Seeing a young wild animal alone can make it look as though something is wrong, but a parent may be nearby, feeding elsewhere or waiting for people to move away before returning.

If the animal appears bright, uninjured and is in a safe place, keep your distance and observe quietly. Human presence can prevent a parent from returning.

When to seek help

Get advice if the animal is visibly injured, weak, cold, in immediate danger, has been caught by a cat or dog, is trapped, or you have good reason to believe a parent is dead or unable to return.

Young birds that are fully feathered may be fledglings and should usually be watched from a distance rather than removed. Keep dogs on leads and keep pets and children away from the area. Do not pick up or move a young wild animal simply because it is alone.
